City of Bones – Cassandra Clare (2007, Margaret K. McElderry Books, New York)
Okay, I’m absurdly late to this party, so let’s just keep it short and simple: I devoured City of Bones…and I’m going back for more. This story of Clary, the girl who suddenly discovers her supernatural powers, and the gang of demon hunters she is thrown in with, has all the twists and turns you can eat. It’s not merely that the story is a romp; the world building and characterization is impressive, as well.
(And, in case you’re wondering, the movie is surprisingly okay).
