Under the Empyrean Sky (Book One of The Heartland Trilogy) – Chuck Wendig (2013, Skyscape, Amazon Publishing)
I love, love, LOVE the premise of this book: it’s a tale of strife and heartache and runaway GMO corn, in a world where a bunch of beleaguered farmers are oppressed by the mighty Empyreans, the elite upper class who live above the corn fields in floating cities. Teenaged hero Cael has a lot to worry about on the ground – and, it turns out, a lot to fight for. LOVE it.
Unfortunately, the final chapter made me more than a little grumpy. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so I can’t spill the beans, but if you do happen to read this one, please chime in with your take. (In my mind, it’s not what happens, but how it is developed). I’ve cooled down now, however, and I fully plan to read the rest of the series, because Wendig seems to be really rolling with it.
