One for the Money – Janet Evanovich (St. Martin’s Paperbacks, 2012 – originally published 1994)
Okay, I know, I know, I’m really late to the Stephanie Plum party – it’s not like (several, SEVERAL) people haven’t tried to get me to read these books. And it’s not like I was unwilling – it’s just that there was always something nearer to the top of my Gigantic Pile o’ Reading. I actually finished reading One for the Money the week the movie came out (so now you know how late I am with this entry) – and boy, oh, boy, I really have been missing something.
What can I say, this was such a fun romp! Humorous, sexy, raunchy and profane (don’t say I didn’t warn you), this murder mystery is genuinely entertaining reading. Stephanie Plum, newbie bounty hunter, is just the right mix of sass, smarts, and vulnerability, and her family (including the irrepressable Grandma Mazur) is a laugh-riot. When Stephanie is charged with the task of bringing in Joseph Morelli, a cop wanted for murder, she has more than her fair share of problems. Turns out Stephanie and Morelli have a rather spicy past…plus, he’s (sigh) really sexy and clever and he keeps showing her up in the most hilarious ways. While Stephanie works on catching Morelli and Morelli works on clearing his name, a whole cast of seedy characters throws in, including a very, very nasty boxer named Ramirez, and the reader very happily joins in the action. Of course, there’s – what – eighteen of these titles so far (plus there are some additional bonus novels as well) and it’s kind of nice and comfortable knowing that you can keep enjoying all the exciting details of Stephanie’s life…and dreamily speculate about whether or not she’ll get together with Morelli, or dishy Ranger, a fellow bounty hunter.
Oh, and guessing what make of vehicle she’ll be driving (or destroying) next.
I haven’t seen the movie yet – for those of you who have, what didja think? How about the casting? – thumbs up, or thumbs down?
